Is polygamy a feminist issue? Yes/No

In South Africa there has been much heated debate around this ancient African tradition. Moreover when the country's President has been actively involved with multiple spouses. Many South Africans feel disgruntled over the Presidents cultural activities of having multiple wives. However it is unsurprising that most criticism come from a particular group of South African society.

If this issue would be argued based on law, it would be a fruitless engagement because there's no wrong-doing in practicing your customary law in modern time even if you're the President of the most sophisticated country in Africa. Polygamy has been in existence for many years, it has never been so scrutinized until recent events involving President Jacob Zuma. We live in Africa for goodness sake, Africans regardless of their status in society or geographical location should feel free to practice their customs and traditions. But..big BUT, that notion shouldn't give males the passport abuse their rights.

  1. Wongz!!!! Hello guy ....

I cannot speak on behalf of feminists hey. But I do think .... and in my religious group polygamy is practised as well ..... but i do think that yoh, that man should stick to sleeping with only his wives then. What are the grounds for polygamy in zulu culture anyway? In Islam it is to safegaurd unmarried vulnerable women with no means to look after themselves. Unfortunately there are still women out there with no education, relying on a man to provide. The first wife has to agree and in some instances even finds another wife for her husband.

I'm researching the zulu culture for this so I'll be reading lots!

  2. In this issue, polygemy is not along with my line, men nor women can not in my sober state of mind share any similar love activities with many wives or husband.Polygemy is completely in sane to me it may happen and be real for other cultures but not in my own.Men do cheat many women but it do not mean they love those women but have the love of 1 wife or husband or they are not treated well in their families.Polygemy is offside!!!!!!!

  3. This is a very old Africa Practice and don’t involve any violation of woman’s rights if practiced exactly as our ancestor did before colonisation. Normally only men with lots of wealth and power would have more than one wives in the African Culture, thus women get into polygamy knowing very well what they are putting themselves into and not being force or threaten in anyway. We are living in country with lots of cultures and ethnic groups; it’s always difficult to make people from one culture to understand practices of the other culture. But we as South Africans have done well in learning to live with each other regardless of our differences. Our constitution is powerful and will always protect those who can protect themselves including women being forces to marry men who already have wives.
